This Geek's Week...

Merry Christmas everyone!

Final This Geek's Week of the year...

** with the holidays right around the corner, I'll be headed out of town, and as such I won't be doing much gaming.  I'll return after Christmas with my annual "End of the Year" post...

Hobby/Modeling:
- I decided to work on a bit of terrain for my nonexistent gaming table.  I'm repainting an old 28mm cargo container that I had laying around.  I also decided to experiment with building some "middle eastern" style houses... Uh, yeah, it didn't work out so well.

- Worked a bit on my CSM Squad for my Red Corsairs.

Card/Board Games:
- Played a bunch of the Pokemon TCG with my daughter.  I FINALLY convinced her to sleeve her cards too!

- Played 2 games of the DBZ TCG at the LGS.

- Bought a few DBZ packs.  I also got a fighting deck and a Tyrantrum box of Pokemon TCG stuff for my daughter...

Video Games:
- Played a bit of War Thunder.  I had some good games and some not so good games...

- Played a few rounds of the Pokemon TCG online...

This Geek's Week...

Hobby/Modeling:
- Worked a wee bit on my 40k stuff, including attempting to sculpt the flames on the spear of my Spiritseer.  I'm really dragging my feet with this army, and minis in general, just because I have so little time to game, and have a hard time actually finding people wanting to play when I do find the time...

Card/Board Games:
- Built several new DBZ decks.  Went back to Namekian Piccolo, built a Black Krillin, a Red Krillin, and a Blue Goku.  I then started to test...

- Played some of the Pokemon TCG with my daughter.  She got some new cards for her Water/Electric deck, then proceeded to kick my butt with them.  She also wanted to play 2v1 and I hashed out some special rules, I ended up winning that one.

- Still working on my custom DBZ playmat.

- Made it up to the shop, and got in a game of the ALIENS deck builder, 2/3 of our team died, but the last guy easily pulled out a win.  I then played a game of the DC Deckbuilder as the Swamp Thing, but came in a distant 2nd with 49 pts.  The winner played Shazam with 98 pts...

Video Games:
- Played a few rounds of War Thunder, low tier Japanese Air.

This Geek's Week...

Modeling/Hobby:
- Worked a bit on my traitor Dark Angels squad for 40k.

Card/Board Games:
- Made a few Dragon Ball tokens to use in the DBZ TCG.  I've also designed a custom playmat that I'm thinking of having printed up.

Spartacus and Gannicus finish off Theokoles...
- Conducted an online trade to get the SDCC promo Krillin, Krillin 1-4 MP, and the Black Mastery from the starters to try and complete my collection.

- Dismantled/Built new DBZ decks for the 100th time!  This time I decided to try Namekian Gohan, Black Krillin, a Blue Piccolo, and a Red Piccolo designed to be anti-Ginyu.  (That's the hope at least)

- Played a game of Spartacus.  It was pretty damn cool!  It went pretty long, but there was a lot of trading, plotting, and backstabbing going on.  It ended in a primus that saw Spartacus teamed up with Gannicus (me) vs Theokoles and one other dude.  We ended up winning the primus, with the Spartacus playing winning overall.

- Tested out the Namekian Gohan deck, but I didn't really like it.  I'm gonna swap it back to piccolo.  I also tested out the red piccolo, it was interesting because I totally boned Ginyu out of his allies, but without any blocks, I couldn't get past the rest of his deck, I'm going to fix it as well...

Video games:
- Played a few rounds of the Pokemon TCG online...

DBZ Night in the Kansas City Area...

An open invite to anyone in the KC area, we are starting up a "DBZ TCG Night" on Mondays.  Come and hangout, trade, play games, get in demos, etc.  Sadly, I work Monday nights, so I wont be there...

... We also have a "DBZ Day" and other periodic events on Saturdays @ 1 pm.  I'm there as often as I can be, given my work schedule.

This Geek's Week...

Since starting the Dragonball Z card game, my hobby time has been
almost exclusively all about DBZ, this week is no different...

Hobby/Modeling:
- Worked a wee bit on my Dark Angels...

Card/Board Games:
- Played a few games of the Pokemon card game with my daughter.  I actually won 1or 2 using my Slapped-together Noivern deck.

- Reworked my DBZ decks.  I converted my Piccolo Namekian to be all anger, I also built a Black Piccolo deck, and a Saiyan Vegeta Suicide.  I then got to play a handful of games with them, and here's what I found:  the Namekian one works pretty nicely, though has a bit of trouble vs Blue Ginyu.  Black Piccolo was alright, but it needs more work.  And Saiyan Vegeta was a blast to play, though again, Ginyu has an answer for everything...

- Picked up a few DBZ starters, and while I was unable to pull the 2 MPs I needed (Krillin & Gohan) I did pull 2 sets of each starter deck types, and managed to trade an extra Goku for Gohan.  Getting closer to having a full set!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Just want to give a quick shout out to all my readers and those that interact with me in the comments.  Thanks everyone, hope you have a good Thanksgiving!  (If you are celebrating of course!)

40k WIP...

I don't usually like to show Work in Progress pictures of my miniatures, as sometimes the whole WIP part can get lost online, but it feels like with how long my army is taking to come together, plus the upcoming holidays around the corner that may also stall my progress, I figured I would make an exception.  Who knows, maybe I'll like showing off WIP pics, and this could become a new thing each week or every other week, depending on progress.  *ahem* Anyway, I figured I would show off my the progress of the traitor Dark Angels CSM squad for my Red Corsairs army, as well as the slow-going work on Iyanden Spiritseer...

Up first, are the Dark Angels for my Red Corsairs...

This Geek's Week...

Hobby/Modeling:
- Worked a bit more on my Dark Angels traitor CSM squad.  I'm liking how they are coming along, hope I don't screw em up!

Card/Board games:
- I bought my 4th, and probably final, DBZ booster box.  I've got a pretty collection
now, and the only thing I'm missing from my collection are 3 URs and some starter cards.

- My nephew is getting into the Pokemon tcg, so for Christmas we got him a starter deck.  I also bought the 2 player trainer kit so that My daughter and I could learn to play the game, in order to play with him when we visit. Played a few 1/2 games and a full one with my daughter.

- Played 3 games of the DBZ card game.  Did a trade with my friend, so it's time to build some new decks...

Video Games:
- Did you know that you can play the Pokemon TCG online for free?  Me either!  I got it set up so my daughter could try, and I ended up playing it more than her!

This Geek's Week...

Another light week...

Hobby/Modeling:
- Worked a bit on the Tactical/CSM squad for my Red Corsairs.  I also worked a little bit on my Spiritseer as well.

Video Games:
- I've been playing a TON of GW2 again lately.  I've had a lot of fun, large, epic battles and realm boss fights.  I'm still mainly playing my Engineer, and although I've played other builds, I always end up back at my turret build.  There is just something cool about dropping a bunch of turrets and wrecking whole areas of mobs, and/or bosses.

Card/Board Games:
- Bought another box of Dragonball Z cards.  No UR this time...

Finished Red Corsairs Traitor-Guard

One GIANT unit!

All the "big names" are represented...
I recently finished up the Cultist element of my Red Corsairs, one big unit of 35!  A lot of them come from the Dark Vengeance box, and a few are a mix of Empire Fanatics and Guard bits.  The overall idea behind them is that they would be a unit of mixed traitor guardsmen from various units, and I have a lot of the "big" units represented: Cadians, Tallarns, Mordians, Valhallans, Catachans, and the Death Korps of Krieg.  All in all, I'm happy with how they turned out, but more so, I'm just happy to finally be done with them!

The unit leader and his fancy coat!

 - One step closer to finishing my Red Corsairs...

This Geek's Week...

This Geek's Week...
Hobby/Modeling:
- Finished up the final 8 cultists, so now the whole unit of 35 is completed.  I've started on the Dark Angels tactical squad.

- Worked a bit on my Arena Rex gladiators.

Card/Board Games:
- Dismantled and rebuilt 3 decks for the DBZ TCG.  I'm still running a Nemekian Piccolo deck, I'm also running a Red Vegeta, and a Black Goku.  They are all still far from optimized due to my limited collection...

Video Games:
- Played a bit of Guild Wars 2, finishing up the level 40-ish Vigil quests on my Engineer.

*** Also, don't forget to vote on my poll off to the side about what Historical game I should start up next.  Honestly, I expected to have my 40k stuff finished by the end of the year, but I don't think I'm going hit that goal.  I'm a bit bored with Sci-Fi and seriously considering starting up a new game system sooner than I expected! ***

Arena Rex Kickstarter Unboxing/Review...

Recently my Arena Rex kickstarter stuff finally arrived, and I am super excited to talk about and review the contents I received!  So slap in a DVD of Spartacus, or sit back and play some Ade or Ex Deo in the background on iTunes, as I discuss my thoughts on Arena Rex.

This Geek's Week...

More DBZ action...

Hobby/Modeling
- Finished 9 more cultists for 40k, I'm down to the final 8...

Card/Boardgames
- Built a couple of Dragonball Z decks.  I then played a few solo test games.

- Played in a smallish DBZ tourney, 1 win & 3 loss.  I'm fine with the results, as I'm still a complete noob, and my deck was really just a non-optimized one filled with just enough cards to make it legal.  Still, none of my games were too terrible, and with the exception of the final one, I'd say I was close to winning each one...

- After the tourney I also picked up my 2nd booster box for the DBZ TCG, so I'll have to redo my decks once more.  While as you can see from a lot of my "This Geek's Week" posts, my interests are constantly ebbing and flowing, however I think I may make the DBZ TCG my "Go to" game (especially card wise) simply because I can easily, and consistently get games in, unlike my other games.  No haggling times online, no hunting down opponents, no begging... just show up Saturdays at 1 pm.

Video Games
- Played a bit of the Halloween event stuff in GW2.  I also played a few rounds of TF2 as well.

Books/Comics
- Finally finished "The Gildar Rift".  I've started up "Blood Reaver", another book featuring the Red Corsairs by Aaron Dembski-Bowden.

This Geek's Week...

Withe the return of the DBZ card game, it has been all about DBZ all weekend long!

Modeling/Hobby
- Worked a bit on my Arena Rex gladiators.

- Worked on my Cultists for 40k.

Card/Boardgames
- I decided to play the Dragon Ball Z CCG, something which I have not done in years.  I bought 2 starter decks and a box of boosters initially...

- Played in a sealed deck event for the DBZ card game at an LGS.  I pulled Goku, and he got thoroughly thrashed all night long!  I still had a blast, and left with like 4 extra boosters and another starter deck.  I'm planning to play again next Saturday.

Video Games
- My daughter and I have been on a bit of a Wakfu/Krosmaster kick, so I ended up downloading Wakfu on steam.  It's pretty fun, it's a turn based, tactical mmo, so it offers something a bit different than my other games...

This Geek's Week...

Hobby/Modeling
- Worked some on my cultists as well as my Spiritseer for 40k.  I managed to finish up 9 more cultists, so 17 more to go.  It feels like progress has been sooo sloooow.

- With the arrival of my Arena Rex kickstarter, I started putting the minis together, and seriously, they are gorgeous sculpts!  A bit fragile, but beautiful. (Imho)  You can expect a full review shortly...

Card/board games
- In an attempt to start getting caught back up in pathfinder: rise of the rune lords, I ran Sajan through the attack in Sandpoint scenario.

- I also built decks for the Pathfinder Skulls & Shackles game too.

- Played a game of Munchkin Pathfinder.

Video games
- Played a several rounds of hearthstone.  Lots of Murloc decks, I love my Murlocs...

- Played several rounds of War Thunder, both air and tanks.  Such an awesome WWII game!

- Did some exploring in Guild Wars 2.  Honestly, exploring each map is one if my favorite things to do in the game...

Noob Review of Warhammer 40k: Conquest

Recently my order for the 40k LCG, Warhammer 40,000: Conquest arrived, and I've had a chance to build several decks, and to get a few trial games in.  I'm calling this a "Noob Review" because I do not have a ton of experience under my belt, these are mostly initial impressions, and I'm not going too deep into the game, mostly just skimming the surface for those who may have been on the fence about the game and just want to know more.  Below is my quick review of the basic game with just the core sets...

Pathfinder Skulls & Shackles Character Add-On Deck list

Something I wish I had done with the previous Rise of the Runelords set for the Pathfinder ACG was to keep track of what monsters came in which adventure deck for the purpose of keeping fights in theme.  I'm a big advocate of stacking the monster deck so that it makes sense, after all, you probably wouldn't fight an aquatic monster in the middle of the desert.  Another example would be during the "Attack on Sandpoint" scenario, making sure the monsters are all goblins or goblin-related, and depending on how many players you have, the only way to do so may be to pick up extra adventure decks.  So, that is point of all this, if you find yourself wanting/needing extra cards for your games, then hopefully this resource will be helpful.  I'll also give a few brief thoughts on each deck, what excites me, and what I find interesting.  You can expect to see more of these with the release of each deck...

Anyway, on with the list!

This Geek's Week...

I'm gonna try a new format for this, hopefully it will be more organized and easier to follow and read...

HOBBY
- Worked on painting some 40k stuff.  I worked a bit on my Eldar Spiritseer, and my Cultists for Chaos.  I'm thinking that instead of trying to complete all 30 at once, I'm thinking of just doing them in smaller, more manageable chunks. (Like 8-10 at a time). This switch let me finish up the Mordian element of my cultists...

- Finished painting my daughter's Battletech Dragon mech.  She then wanted to start a new one...

- Picked up 2 new sets of brushes, as mine were pretty shot!

- Built a bit of 40k related terrain for my future gaming table.

VIDEO GAMES
- Played a bunch of Guild Wars 2.  A little less than last week, my Engineer is now lvl 37.

CARD/BOARD GAMES
- Built a few decks for the 40k LCG.  I'm mainly planning to play Space Marines, Eldar, and Chaos, since those are the 3 armies I'm into in the tabletop game.

- Played a few solo "learning" games of the 40k LCG.  1st was Eldar vs Marines, with the Eldar defeating the Marines.  Next game was Eldar vs Chaos, with the Eldar's mobility and swarming abilities winning the day, as they could spread out and converge once the Warlord popped up.

- Modified/Rebuilt my Star Wars LCG decks, namely my ongoing Trooper deck and a new all-star Bounty Hunter deck.

- Made it up to the LGS and played 3 games of the Aliens Deckbuilder.  First game we were breezing through until we hit the Queen, and she murdered us.  2nd game we got swarmed early on and were picked off 1 by 1.  3rd game we finally ended up winning...

Johnson County KS Historical Gamers Facebook Group

I finally decided to bite the bullet and start taking a few steps towards reaching out to other local historical wargamers through a facebook group I created called the "JOCO Historical Wargamers".  The overall hope/goal was to create a kind of "hub" on Facebook for fans of historical wargaming in and around the Johnson County, KS and Kansas City area to discuss the hobby, find new players, and hopefully arrange for some games at one of the local shops.  The page can be found HERE , and I'm posting this to tray and spread the word, and to get others involved on the off chance that someone from the area may stumble upon my blog.  Even if you are not from my neck of the woods, feel free to check it out if you'd like...

I'm hoping this works out, and grows into something worthwhile.  I know there are plenty of Historical gamers in my area, the trick is finding them!  This is the closest thing to a "gaming club" that we can get in my area (at least in my experience) so I'm definitely open to any and all ideas in regards to promotion, group building/growing, and keeping everyone engaged and interested!

The grand experiment has begun...

This Geek's Week...

- I guess in officially a Guild Wars 2 player now, as I bought the game after the free trial weekend.  It's early on, but I'm loving it so far!  I rolled a Charr Engineer, along with 4 other Charr characters... Care to guess my favorite race?

-  Miniatures wise, I  worked a bit on my 40k cultists.  I'm also secretly helping my daughter paint her Dragon mech for Battletech while she is in school. She base coated it, I'm adding the details.

- Played a game of Star Trek attack wing with my daughter.  Feds (her) vs Romulans (me) and I lost!  She really doesn't get how to maneuver well, pretty random, "okaaay, so a sudden reversal... sure, we can go with that?" (What do you expect, she's only 4!) but she definitely out rolls me when she fires!  Her torpedoes made pretty quick work of my ships...

- A buddy of mine gave me a free copy of Level 7: Escape.  Also my giant order from Coolstuffinc finally arrived after sitting in pre-order limbo for 2 months.  I've now got all but the latest of Star Wars LCG decks, 2x copies of the 40k LCG, a TIE Phamtom for X-Wing, and the Pathfinder ACG: Skulls & Shackles core set + character add on.

This Geek's Week...

- Worked a bit on my cultists for 40k.  Progress has been slower than expected due to work and getting sidetracked with video games.

- On the video game side, I have been playing World of Tanks: Blitz, and Hearthstone.  I've also been playing Guild Wars 2, thanks to their free-to-play week.  I've tinkered with all the races and played a few levels of several of the classes.  Thus far, I like the Charr and the Sylvari races the best.  So far, I'm leaning towards a Charr Engineer for a main...

- Played a quick 1v1 game of Battletech with my daughter.  She saw my House Steiner painted minis and wanted to try it out.  She flubbed 3 to hit rolls in a row, and ended up losing because of that. I'm starting to notice a "terrible roll" trend with her!  She must have liked it, because she decided to pick her own mech to paint and pilot, a dragon. (Cuz she said the body looked like an Imperial Star Destroyer)

- Picked up a copy of Wargames Soldiers & Strategy.  I also picked up an older copy of Wargames Illustrated to compare the two magazines.  I plan to subscribe to the one I like best...

- I also picked up the U.S.S. Voyager for Star Trek Attack wing.

- Played a few family games on our little "family day" we call "Sunday-Funday". Vesper played some GW2. We played a family game of Battletech, Star Wars checkers, and munchkin pathfinder.  Vesper liked munchkin, and although my wife had no clue what was going on, she ended up quickly winning in a landslide!

This Geek's Week...

finally got back to playing a bit of War Thunder

- Worked a bunch on my cultists for 40k.  Thus far, I have 4 of the 35 done.  Things are slowly progressing for them, I'm thinking/hoping that I can get several more done by the end of this week...

- Played a few rounds of World of Tanks Blitz on my phone.

- After getting the computer fixed and restored, I was finally able to play a few rounds of Hearthstone.  I finally also got to where I can play War Thunder once more, though the FPS is a bit sporadic.  For the 1st two days, I was getting 15-20 FPS, but last night I was consistently running around 120 FPS.  I'll probably get tinkering with the graphics settings a bit more to find the perfect balance between beauty and FPS...

Monday, September 15, 2014

This Geek's Week...

- Once more I've been playing a ton of Team Fortress 2 and Hearthstone.

- Worked on my Cultists for 40k.

- Played a game of the ALIEN deck builder, and it ended badly!  The researcher turned into an alien, and dismantled the Synthetic really quickly.

... And my computer crapped out on me over the weekend while trying to update the OS.  Off to get it fixed! (Hopefully I can get this to properly post from my phone)

Finished Red Corsair Bikers...

Recently I managed to finish up the first 3 bikes from the Dark Vengeance box that would make up a 1/3 of my future Khornate Red Corsair Bike Squad.  Essentially I used these 3 to form the special weapons section (2x meltas), champion, and icon bearer portion of the squad.  All in all, I'm pretty pleased with the outcome.

New Poll: What comes after 40k?

Although I expect to be working on 40k for awhile, I'm already already looking towards what my next project will be, and I have decided to ask my viewers (all 3 of you) to help me decide!  I've posted a poll up on the right side of the blog with a couple of options, and the astute will notice that after working on a bunch of sci-fi lately, I'm leaning towards something historical!

So, what are your thoughts?  Should I go with some 28mm WWII, something Ancient, perhaps some Vikings, maybe I should start up a crusade, or go with some pre-painted naval/arial dogfighting?  Or should I finish up another Flames of War army so I can sit alone in my basement replaying the Battle of Cisterna?

You can help make the call...

This Geek's Week...

Team Fortress 2... lots, and lots of TF2...

- On the video game side, I've started playing Team Fortress 2.  I've also been playing Hearthstone, saving up enough to unlock the military quarter...

- Played a game of the L5R version of love letter with my daughter.  We followed that up with a ton of her games like checkers, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Trouble, and Go Fish.  Also got in a family game of Rampage.

- Finished up my Red Corsair bikers and worked a bit on my Spititseer for 40k.  I've also moved on to working on my cultists, which are going to be done in a mix of old guard regiments. (Tallarn, Mordian, Catachan, Cadians, etc)

- Even though I've not finished the Gildar Rift, I went ahead and got Blood Reaver from the 1/2 Priced Bookstore to continue getting inspiration for my Red Corsairs...

My method for saving money and painting more...

I know him, so his face was altered to protect the innocent...

Are you sitting on a giant pile of unpainted metal or plastic?  Boxes stacked high, dusty and unopened?  More unpainted stuff than painted?  I'm probably one of the only gamers that I know of who does NOT suffer from this issue, but it wasn't always the case.  Here's what I did that helped solve the issue...

This Geek's Week...

Loving the new ALIEN Deckbuilder!

- Worked a bit on my Khorne Bikers for 40k.

- Played a bunch of Hearthstone, saving up the 700 pts to unlock the next naxx level by doing the daily quests...

- Tinkered around in F2P WoW.  I was debating on upgrading fully, but I'm on the fence.  I'm sure the desire will pass once I get out of my WoW phase...

- Played 6 games of the Pathfinder ACG, solo...

Can you tell which color is my daughter's favorite?
- Went to the LGS to look for a few things.  My daughter picked out a TIE Defender to be "her ship" in X-Wing.  I also repainted it to HER specifications...

- Much to the dismay of my wife, I went to another LGS and picked up the Legendary Encounters Alien Deckbuilder, the Star Trek attack wing starter, extra dice, a 22nd cent Romulan Bird of Prey, and once more, my daughter picked out her own ship, the Reliant. (Which I also repainted to her specs)

- Played of solo game of the ALIEN Deckbuilder.  I was a Synthetic, playing through the first movie.  Made a few rules mistakes, but nothing major.  The game ended when I flipped the 3rd hazard, causing the "Perfect Organism" to be sent directly to the combat zone, where he finished me off!  All in all, I really enjoyed it!

- Played a family game of x-wing, with my daughter and I playing the Empire, and my non-gamer wife playing the rebels.  We followed it up with a game of Star Trek, but my daughter lost interest after a few rounds.  Finally, we played a few 1/2 games of the DC Deckbuilder...

Finished Red Corsair Termie Squad

I recently finished up the first squad from my Red Corsairs, and all in all, I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out.  I've placed an overall high emphasis on the fluff of the army, and as such, I tried to make each model unique, to have their own little character, or to tell their own little story.  I'll start with a little info on the unit themselves, the "Crimson Blades", then move into the models themselves...

Monday, August 25, 2014

This Geek's Week...

They may not be my best decks, but my 2 druid decks are easily my favorite...

- Worked a bunch on my 40k stuff, this time around I worked a bit on my Eldar Spiritseer as well.  I managed to finish up the rest of my termie squad.  Next comes working on my Khornate biker squad. I've also got to start forcing myself to go back to working in an assembly line method for the rest of army.

- Played a ton of Hearthstone.  I managed to save up enough gold to unlock and beat the second level of solo play as well as class challenges.  I've noticed a lot of my decks are getting trounced by people with access to better cards, so as I still refuse to spend any money on the game, I'm going to have focus on 1 or 2 decks and do a lot of card crafting.  I go by "WuhSawBe#1604" on there is anyone wants to play me. (And prolly beat up on me)

- Played a few rounds of WoT Blitz on my iPhone, though it kinda sucks on such a small screen, I really think I should be playing it on iPad...

Monday, August 18, 2014

This Geek's Week...

- Been working more on my 40k stuff.  I scrounged up another 15 cultists to fill out the unit using a mix of empire fanatics and Guard parts.  I've also been working on painting the Termies, finishing up one more...

- Played more of the 40k mobile games.

- Finished reading the Jedi Path book, now I can get back to reading the Gildar Rift...

- Played a few rounds of Hearthstone solo mode, beating the first 3 Naxx bosses and class challenges...

Monday, August 11, 2014

This Geek's Week...

- I downloaded the 40k: Carnage, Storm of Vengeance, and Warhammer Quest app.  Pretty fun little games, especially Warhammer Quest.

- Worked a ton on assembling my 40k stuff, finally finishing the Dark Vengeance box contents.  I scrounged up 15 more cultists to assemble as well for a full 35...

- Using my birthday money, I went a bit crazy in the gaming department!  I preordered the Skulls & Shackles stuff for the Pathfinder ACG.  Preordered 2x core sets of the 40k LCG.  Got caught up on all the Star Wars LCG force packs I had missed out on. (6 or 7 of em)  Picked up some random sleeves and deck boxes, and a TIE Phantom.  I also picked up Vol 1 of the Pathfinder comic, and the Munchkin Pathfinder game.

- Played a few games of the Pathfinder ACG.  I'd like to be able get a character back up to deck #6 for when it arrives.

- Played a game of Castle Panic.  It was alright.  I'm starting to think that no matter which game I play, the guys I've been playing with will end up slowing down each game regardless, due to booze, arguing, and lack of focus... still, it is better than option B, which is not play anything at all!

Red Corsairs - Finished Test Terminator scheme

Recently I finished up the first model of my new 40k project, a Red Corsairs army built upon a foundation of Dark Vengeance minis.  It has been a long time since I have painted anything from GW, and say what you will about their games, prices, and/or corporate policies, but I really enjoyed putting these together and painting them!  Dare I say it, I almost had FUN doing it... and considering the fact that I do not truly like the painting/modeling aspects of the hobby (I just hate unpainted stuff even more so) then it is a bit of a compliment for sure!

Sunday, August 3, 2014

This Geek's Week...

"The derp are derpest alone..."

- I've been working on my 40k army, both assembly and painting.  Thus far, I have a terminator "test model" completed.

- Played another game of the Star Trek Deck Builder.  I still say that game takes at least an hour too long...

- Played some Star Wars LCG, 2 close games.  First using my Navy deck, which squeaked out a win.  Next game, I played my "weapon smugglers", and although I lost, I felt like the deck had potential.  I kept sweeping the board, but what cost me was that I was never able to turn the force struggle to the lightside.

Getting the most out the new 40k Dark Vengeance box

Recently I made the jump back into 40k with 7th edition, and if you are like me, one of the major barriers was general cost of entry (or re-entry in my case) into the game.  However,  the latest Dark Vengeance box could alleviate a lot of the issue, with a little creative thinking in either the fluff or crafting department. (Or both). With that in mind, I'll be going over all the contents of box, along with my thinking, and my approach to using and building a list out of the Dark Vengeance box set.

Finished: Convergence Corollary and Optifex Directive

I recently finished up my Corollary and Optifex Directive for my my new Convergence of Cyriss force, giving me a solid 15 pt list to start with.  Not much to say about them except, all in all, I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out...

This Geek's Week...

** Bit of a BIG week for me in the gaming the department, though it still feels like I have not done a whole lot...

- I guess Lini had it easy last week, as the "Approach to Thistletop" ended up killing her!  It started off rough, and did not improve at all!  Since I was going to be attacking a Goblin Fortress, I used only monsters with the Goblin trait in my deck, and ended having to increase to difficulty to defeat goblins by 4 due the scenario special rules. (I rolled a 4). Needless to say, I never even made it out the woods, with 3 failed combats in a row!  Bummer, I liked Lini, but I think I may give Amiri a try....

- Tried to run Amiri through the Brigandoom scenario, but she utterly failed... TWICE!  Sorry Amiri, but if you can't even handle lowly bandits, then you are not gonna work for me! I let my daughter pick my next character (with a bit of nudging) and she picked Seelah the Paladin...

- Finished painting my Corollary and Optifex Directive unit for WM/H...

- Tore apart ALL of my Star Wars LCG decks, and have built new ones.  On the darkside, I have a Navy TIE/Capital ship deck, I also have a more Sith-centric Trooper deck, and a Bounty Hunter's Guild deck.  On the lightside, I'm experimenting with a Han/Chewie/Falcon/ Weapon deck I call the "Weapon Smugglers", and I'm also running a Rebel/Renegade Squadron Vehicle deck.  I have not bought any force packs in such a long time, so I'm kind of limited on what I can use...

- Played a game of Rampage with my daughter...

-  Back to playing the Pathfinder ACG,  Seelah barely eeked it out alive of the Brigandoom scenario.  Not sure why I have been struggling so much on that one lately...

- Since I did not have a 7th ed 40k rulebook, and aside from the Iyanden book, I had not started an Eldar, I decided to pick up the new Dark Vengeance box.  I also decided to get the most out of box by playing the Red Corsairs and using all the Dark Angel stuff as traitors that have joined Huron's cause after being swayed by the Fallen Angel Psyker they were hunting.  I plan on going the original corsair route, painting all the DA in normal colors, then having all the loyalist iconography "X"ed out.  I also picked up the Chaos Codex and "The Gildar Rift" by Sarah Cawkwell for a bit of Red Corsair inspiration.

- Been working on my 40k stuff.  I painted up my Imperial Fist rhino to be a chaos one.  I've also been putting together and converting up the models from the DV box.  Say what you want about GW's corporate policies, and 40k as a game, but I must say that I have truly enjoyed putting these models together!  (which is something I haven't done in a long time)  Most of the time, I dislike the building and painting process, it is merely a means to an end, which is to get them on the table, but not so with these guys.  I'm actually having FUN building and converting!

- Played a game of the DC Deckbuilder as Nightwing, killing 6 of 8 villains and winning the game.

This Geek's Week...

This week felt like a bit of a "Pathfinder Week"...

- Finished up the last two light jacks from my Convergence Battle Box.  (which I posted earlier this week)  I've now moved on to working on my Corollary and Optifex Directive unit.

- Played a bit of the Pathfinder ACG this week,  starting off by running Lini through the "poison pill" scenario.  This time around, I managed to find and defeat the villain at each turn, and came away with a new pet snake and tiger for Lini!  I then ran her through "Black Fang's Dungeon", where she easily swatted aside the black dragon and his undead minions.  She then breezed through the attack on Sandpoint and Local Heroes, but struggled a little bit through the Trouble in Sandpoint scenario.

- I also played a game of Rampage and the L5R version of Love Letter with my 4 yr old daughter.

- Played a game of the Star Trek Deck Builder.  It was fun, but took waaaay too long imho.  The game took 3 hours to complete, and for most of it (2 hours worth) I couldn't do much of anything, fight any ships, or complete many missions as I couldn't upgrade my ship.  Really, the fun vs time ratio was off...

Completed Convergence Battle Box!

Having only just recently decided to give Warmachine/Hordes another go, I settled on the Convergence of Cyriss as my new, main faction.  It has probably been a year or more since I actually painted anything for WM/H.  All in all, I'm pretty please with how they turned out.  More detailed pictures are below...

This Geek's Week...

Spiritseer WuhSawBe is happy cuz he just found the perfect necklace to go with his dress!

- Worked on painting up my convergence battle box.  So far, I have finished up the Cipher Warjack and Syntherion.

- Got the decals and weathering all finished on my FoW stuff. Now my army is 100% completed!

- Played a few rounds of WoT:Blitz on my phone.

- Worked a bit on my MYTH Stalkers.

- Picked up the Iyanden book for 40k.  After Warmachine, I think I'm gonna work on a 40k army next.

- Picked up a Corollary and Optifex Directive for my Convergence.

- Played a game of x-wing, using 2x Saber Squadron with push the limit, Turr, and Fel against several random named TIE pilots and a defender.  I lost, but managed to take down 2 pilots before I died.

- Played 4 games of the Star Wars LCG, winning one.

- I painted all the bases and stands for x-wing black, the idea being, not only would it look cool, but it would also help tell my ships apart from my opponent's.  I also marked the sides on all my tokens, so I can tell them apart as well...
