Frostgrave Hobby Progress...

While I'm still waiting for the bulk of my Frostgrave Warband to arrive, I went ahead and worked on just a few things while taking a break from painting KDM stuff.  My idea was to combine Frostgrave with my love of the Pathfinder universe, and thus the idea for a tribe of Snow Goblins was born!  Pathfinder Goblins have this really unique look to them, and are so full of character, I knew I wanted a Goblin Elementalist (goblins like to blow stuff up!) and I lucked out when I read on the Pathfinder Wiki about the existence of these snow variants.  That said, I don't think I'll be stopping there in terms of warbands, there is potential for an actual Pathfinder Warband, as well as the idea for a Cheliax Summoner warband, decked out in Hellknights!  But, I digress.  Before I get too far ahead of myself talking about grandiose plans, let me show you what little bit I have completed thus far...

First up, were the statues for the "Living Museum" scenario.  They were crafted out of spare bases, bottle caps, and figures from "Freeblades" by DGS games.  They look much darker in the picture than in real life, and overall I'm pleased with the outcome.  As with my Frostgrave Treasure Tokens, I was hoping for a bit of narrative element.  In the game, the warbands come across the remains of a wizard's house, and in the center are these 6 statues with treasure tokens in front.  Once someone touches a treasure token, a random statue comes to life and attacks.  The models I used all look the same, and the goal was that the statues may resemble a hero's progression from a regular guy, to a warrior, to a king, then to a sage/wizard.  Maybe these statues are of the wizard himself, who's house the warbands just entered.  One of my favorite things to do of course, in any game, is set up little narratives like these.  I'm very much into the storytelling aspect of tabletop games...

Up next, is my Goblin Warchanter Boss, or Elemental Wizard, that will lead my warband. (officially, a Goblin Commando on Goblin Dog from Reaper)  He's on a goblin dog, to set him apart as a leader, and while there are no rules in Frostgrave at the moment for mounts, I thought about representing the dog via certain spells like "leap" to represent that increased mobility.  In hindsight, I probably should have put a bit more cloths on him, he's bound to get cold...

Finally, my Goblin Warchanter, my apprentice, from Reaper. (Bones)  After a bit of an issue with the first one, the second one came out alright.  As I've been discussing with one my readers, Dai, I learned my lesson about not priming bones models!  There was a bit of an issue with the material not wanting to clean up properly too.  Instead of being able to cleanly cut or file away mold-lines, the material kind of "shreds" for lack of better term, which you can see in certain parts, especially in the whip area.  Moving forward, I'm going to have to just settle for some mold-lines, here and there, and just fix something IF it looks especially bad.  As Dai mentioned, "you get what you pay for", and the bones models are very cheap... cheap enough that I can live with some of the imperfections, and once on the tabletop, I'm sure the Bones Goblins will look fine...

... and there you have it!  Again, I'm just waiting on the bulk of my warband to arrive at my LGS, 2x Blisters of Reaper Bones Goblin Warriors.  I also need to go through the rest of scenarios and figure out what models I may need as well.  Then, there is the serious issue of terrain.  Several of the scenarios call for very specific terrain, some I'll have to come up with a way of buying/crafting some.  I'm done trying to attempt to scratch-build terrain, as the latest batch just did NOT work out.  Terrain building just seems to be a skill I do not possess!  I'm hoping to one day grab enough of the Pegasus Hobbies Gothic buildings to craft all my frostgrave terrain.

I'll try and keep everyone posted on any more Frostgrave Progess I make in the future...

  1. I stole your idea on using a bottle lid to act as a base for my planned statue. >_>

Super effective use of rubbish btw. :)

    1. haha, thanks! It usually never works out that way. I always see people that can create insane terrain pieces out of cans, bottles, and other junk, and you would never even know. Me, on the other hand, just can't seem to do it! (I've tried) I'm definitely glad this one worked out...
